The Story of the World’s Most Famous Portuguese Sweet

The 19th Century – The Birth of a Legend!

The story begins in the historic district of Belém in Lisbon, specifically in the shadow of the Belém Tower and the famous Jerónimos Monastery.

At the time, monks used egg whites to starch their religious garments. This left them with a surplus of egg yolks, which they ingeniously used to make rich custard pastries, selling them to the public to support the monastery. Following the Liberal Revolution in 1820, the monasteries were closed. The monks began selling the pastries on the streets and eventually sold the secret recipe to a nearby sugar refinery owner, who opened one of Lisbon's most famous pastry shops. From there, the Pastel de Nata became an eternal Portuguese icon.

From a Monastery Recipe... To a Global Phenomenon

By the end of the 19th century, the Pastel de Nata transformed from a local delight into a worldwide sensation, capturing the hearts of everyone who tasted it. Today, millions of these tarts are sold annually in thousands of cafés and restaurants across the globe.

It has become an authentic symbol of Lisbon, standing alongside Fado music and the art of Azulejos. A golden, crispy pastry filled with delicious custard, holding within it the authentic taste of Portugal.

2025 – De Nata in Riyadh

After witnessing the huge success of our first branch among the Arab community in Portugal, we decided to bring the world's most famous Portuguese sweet to the Arab world. We wanted to create a destination for every Arab who loves the charm of Portugal and the deep, historic ties shared between our nations! We chose Riyadh as the hub to take our first steps in the Middle East.
